Tuan has an established career as an independent writer and novelist.
He was arrested in 1992 after attempting to send writings critical of the state abroad. He was convicted of “spreading propaganda against the state” and sentenced to 10 years in prison and four years of probation, released in 2002. After prison, he wrote a memoir.
He was awarded the 2012 Hellman/Hammett award.
Tuan’s daughter, Huynh Thuc Vy, and son, Huynh Trong Hieu, are activist bloggers.
