Details
Tuan has an established career as an independent blogger and novelist.
He was arrested in 1992 after attempting to send writings critical of the state abroad. He was convicted of “spreading propaganda against the state” and sentenced to 10 years in prison and four years of probation, released in 2002. After prison, he wrote a memoir. He was awarded the 2012 Hellman/Hammett award.
Tuan regularly publishes commentary on Vietnamese politics and human rights on Facebook.
Tuan’s daughter, Huynh Thuc Vy, and son, Huynh Trong Hieu, are activist bloggers.
Sentenced to 8 years 6 months in prison under Art. 117 (2015 Code). Expected Release is April 7, 2034.

The Dak Lak provincial court convicted blogger Huynh Ngọc Tuan on April 2, 2026, for spreading "propaganda against the state" and sentenced him to eight years and six months in prison. Neither Tuan's lawyer, Nguyen Kha Thanh, nor his family, received formal notification in advance of the trial, only a verbal message from local police the day before, according to his daughter and fellow human rights activist Huynh Thuc Vy.
